GVMC officials caught red-handed taking bribe
They had demanded a bribe of ₹20,000 for processing and issuing a death certificate.
Visakhapatnam: Two outsourced employees of the Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) – Dandi Satya Surya Naga Purna Chandra Sekhar, 44, a data entry operator in the Births and Deaths Section of Public Health, and Barakala Venkata Ramana, 55, a supervisor in the same department, have been arrested on Monday while accepting a bribe.
They had demanded a bribe of ₹20,000 for processing and issuing a death certificate.
Complainant Mandala Bhanu Prakash, a 20-year-old resident of Narayanapuram village, approached the officials for the death certificate of his father M. Srinivasa Rao, a head constable in the Railway Protection Force (RPF), who tragically died in a train-shunting accident on January 1, 2025.
Despite this being a public service, the accused officers demanded illegal payment.
Following this, Bhanu Prakash lodged a complaint with the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB). Bureau officials asked the complainant to hand over the tainted amount to Ramana, who received the amount and put it in his trouser pocket.
ACB officials then arrested Ramana and chemical tests confirmed that he had taken the bribe.
