GVMC Identifies Flood-Prone Areas, Sets Up Machinery on Alert
Efforts are also underway to ensure an uninterrupted water supply and prevent water contamination.

Visakhapatnam: With heavy rains posing flood threats, the Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) has identified vulnerable slums and hilly and low-lying areas, while initiating a series of emergency preparedness measures with the coordination of all departments.
Dilapidated structures across the city have been listed and sturdy school and community buildings have been designated as emergency shelters for possible evacuees. The GVMC teams are mapping and clearing drainage lines, manholes and water-logging points to prevent flooding, while taking steps for immediate repair of damaged streetlights and clearance of fallen trees.
Efforts are also underway to ensure an uninterrupted water supply and prevent water contamination. As a precaution against strong winds, old and unstable hoardings across the city are being dismantled. The GVMC’s regional fire officer is on standby to respond swiftly in the event of fire-related emergencies.
GVMC vehicles, generators, proclainers, tree-cutting machines, trucks and fuel are on standby for quick deployment. Officers, engineers and zonal commissioners are instructed to prepare radio handsets and ensure that staff in zonal and secretariat areas are equipped to implement protective measures.
Residents are advised to use electrical appliances with caution, keep children away from stagnant water, avoid walking or driving through flooded areas and stay clear of trees, hoardings, electricity transformers, poles and dilapidated buildings during the heavy rain.
The GVMC control room is now operational at the city operations centre, GVMC headquarters. For any help, residents can contact toll-free number 180042500009 or reach out to their local zonal office.
