GVMC Council Braces For No-Confidence Showdown

Alliance corporators arrive from Malaysia, YSRC boycotting vote

Visakhapatnam:The Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation Council would discuss a no-confidence motion against Mayor Golagani Hari Venkata Kumari on April 19.

Corporators from the TD-led alliance are arriving from Malaysia to discuss the motion that is directed also against deputy mayor Jiyyani Sridhar.

This special session at the GVMC council hall is a pivotal moment in Visakhapatnam's political landscape.

Corporators from the YSRC are expected to arrive in Visakhapatnam from Sri Lanka on April 20. However, they would abstain from the no-confidence motion, in a strategic move to dissociate themselves from the proceedings.

Visakhapatnam collector Harendhira Prasad held a meeting with GVMC officials on Thursday to discuss preparations for the council meeting. HE asked the row officers and identification officers to ensure a smooth conduct of the meeting.

Ex-officio members and ward representatives attending the session have been directed to switch their mobile phones to flight mode upon entering the council hall premises. Access will be restricted to only those individuals possessing valid identification credentials.

TD leaders say their alliance, which comprises corporators from the TD, JS, BJP and ex-officio members, has a total strength of 75. Jana Sena leaders claim their party has 14 members, an increase from three to 11 corporators due to defections from the YSRC.

YSRC leader Amarnath expressed confidence in his party's ability to counter the no-confidence motion. He stated, “We are issuing a whip and have urged the collector to conduct the no-confidence motion voting in a fair manner.”

Meanwhile, former YSRC minister Muthamsetty Avanti Srinivas' daughter Muthamsetty Lakshmi Priyanka, the 6th ward YSRC corporator and chief whip of GVMC, announced her resignation from the YSRC.

As the city anticipates this critical meeting, the divergent strategies of the two political factions highlight the deep divide within the council. The outcome of this motion will have far-reaching implications for Visakhapatnam's governance and political dynamics.
