GVMC Approves ₹4,180 Crore Budget For 2026-27

The council also approved ₹20 crore for the upcoming ISR (SFC/Milan) event.

Visakhapatnam: The Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) on Tuesday presented its consolidated budget estimates for the 2026-27 financial year, projecting total receipts of ₹4,180.37 crore and expenditure of ₹4,047.12 crore, leaving a closing balance of ₹133.25 crore.

Mayor Pila Srinivas Rao presented the budget, which was later explained in detail by examiner Vasudeva Reddy. The estimates include an opening balance of ₹365.96 crore and receipts under all heads amounting to ₹3,814.41 crore. Members noted that this would be the final budget session of the present council, as its term ends next month. The Mayor highlighted GVMC’s growth, recalling that its budget stood at just ₹3 crore at inception and has now crossed ₹4,000 crore.
The session witnessed sharp political debate. YSRC corporators expressed dissatisfaction over what they termed reduced allocations compared to previous regimes, though they ultimately approved the budget to ensure continuity of development works. Floor leader Banala Srinivas Rao recalled higher funding during the tenure of late Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy. Corporators raised concerns over caste-based allocations, alleged neglect of certain constituencies, and demanded equal distribution of funds across all 98 wards. NDA corporators countered by calling for comparisons with allocations during the YSRC rule, while Left corporators sought greater support from both the Centre and the State.
The council also approved ₹20 crore for the upcoming ISR (SFC/Milan) event. Discussion was held on corporators’ honorarium, with a proposal to increase the monthly amount from ₹6,000 to ₹12,000, subject to approval. Last year, ₹1 crore was spent on salaries, while this year’s estimate stands at ₹80 lakh due to the early conclusion of the council’s term.
