VIJAYAWADA: In a major anti-narcotics operation, the Guntur district police arrested 14 persons for ganja sale and consumption and seized nearly 4.95 kg of the contraband in the Pedakakani police station limits on Sunday.
Addressing a media conference at the district police office, superintendent of police Vakul Jindal said the arrests followed credible intelligence and a swift raid led by Pedakakani circle inspector T.P. Narayana Swamy. A case was registered as Crime No. 3/2026 under Sections 8(c) read with 20(b)(ii)(B) of the NDPS Act at Pedakakani police station.
Police seized about 4.8 kg of ganja from four alleged sellers and another 150 grams, packed in small sachets, from 10 consumers. The raid was conducted near an abandoned thatched shed close to the Primary Health Centre in Pedakakani village. The suspects attempted to flee on noticing the police but were apprehended. During interrogation, they confessed to buying, selling and consuming ganja.
The prime accused, Mutyala Ramana Rao alias Rocky, allegedly procured ganja from the Araku region and supplied it locally.
Police said several of the accused have prior criminal records, including cases related to ganja, theft and assault. All the accused were arrested and remanded to judicial custody. Further investigation is under way to trace the entire supply chain, including suppliers, peddlers and consumers.
Highlighting sustained enforcement efforts, Jindal said that over the past three months, police registered 41 ganja cases, seized more than 68 kg of dry ganja, liquid ganja and hydro ganja, along with MDMA and MDM, identified 240 suspects and arrested 188 persons. Under the Sankalpam initiative, 57 awareness programmes were conducted in schools, colleges and universities, including VIT-AP and KL University. Eleven cordon-and-search operations led to the seizure of 486 vehicles.
Seven cases have been booked under the PD Act, while proposals in 14 cases have been sent under the PIT NDPS Act. The SP commended the Pedakakani police team for their vigilance and urged citizens to share information on drug-related activities with the police or dial 112.
