Guntur: Junior Assistant Jailed in Bribery Case

The ACB has urged citizens to report instances of corruption by contacting the toll-free numbers

VIJAYAWADA: A junior assistant working in the district industries department, Guntur, was sentenced to two years of rigorous imprisonment and fined `5,000 by a special ACB court for demanding and accepting a bribe in connection with the release of a government subsidy under the Prime Minister Employment Generation Programme (PMEGP).

The convict, Ravela Peda Veerabhadra Rao, had sought an illegal gratification of `10,000 from the complainant, Vurubandi Acharya Lenin of A.T. Agraharam in Guntur town, for processing his application and forwarding it to the general manager of the district industries centre. The complainant had applied to set up a brick manufacturing unit, Triple “L” Fly Ash Industry, in his wife’s name. While the loan under the PMEGP scheme was sanctioned, a subsidy amount of `3.50 lakh was pending release.

Unwilling to pay the bribe, the complainant approached the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB). Acting on the complaint, the DSP, ACB, Vijayawada, registered a case in 2011 under relevant sections of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988. The accused was caught red-handed on July 12, 2011, while demanding and accepting the bribe.

Following investigation, a charge sheet was filed before the ACB Court, Vijayawada. After a full trial, Special Judge Justice Bhaska Rao pronounced the conviction on December 12, 2025.
