Vijayawada: Government Railway Police personnel opened 10 rounds of fire on a gang trying to tamper the railway signal to stop trains and loot passengers at Aluru railway gate near Nidubrole railway station of Ponnuru mandal in Guntur district on Tuesday.
According to GRP, two to three men equipped with electric wire cutters and hand gloves were found on the railway track under suspicious circumstances. The GRP personnel focussed their torch on them to ascertain their identity and the reason for their presence on the railway tracks.
The gang started to pelt stones on the personnel.
The personnel retaliated by opening 10 rounds of fire on the gang that escaped under the cover of darkness.
Later, the personnel recovered an electric wire cutter, a tester and a pair of hand gloves. GRP alerted the civil police who in turn rushed to the spot and took up a search operation for the fleeing men. A case has been booked by GRP at Tenali police station and an investigation has been started.
GRP officials maintain that in the wake of some men resorting to signal-tampering to stop trains and loot the passengers, armed personnel are keeping a watch on vulnerable signal posts. They are armed with the orders to open fire on suspects in such cases.
They are keeping a watch at nearly 15 to 20 signal posts located at Narasaraopeta, Nadikudi, Guntur, Bapatla, Nidubrole and other places from 9pm to 5am to thwart attempts to change the green signal to red by tampering with the signal post and stop the trains.
Railway authorities are also expressing concern over the development as several trains will be moving from and to Chennai, Bengaluru, Tirupati and others regularly. Any unauthorised stopping of the train may result in a major disaster as trains coming from behind may hit the suddenly stopped train.
