Govardhan Reddy Questions Liquor Scam Probe
Former minister Kakani Govardhan Reddy questioned the SIT's liquor scam probe, alleging political targeting of YSRC leaders and pressure on accused to become approvers.
The YSRC has alleged that the coalition government is using the ongoing liquor scam investigation to target its leaders and create a false narrative, while questioning the manner in which the probe is being conducted.
Addressing the media here on Sunday, former minister Kakani Govardhan Reddy alleged that new accused-turned-approvers were being introduced to make fresh allegations against YSRC leaders. He also questioned the changing estimates of the alleged scam and alleged that the SIT investigation was being influenced by the government.
Govardhan Reddy cited cases involving two gunmen of former YSRC leader Chevireddy Bhaskar Reddy and alleged that one was favoured while the other was subjected to harassment. He also questioned the circumstances surrounding the recent statement of Satya Prasad, alleging that accused persons were being pressured to become approvers.
He claimed that the actual liquor-related irregularities occurred during the previous term of the present Chief Minister and alleged that liquor sales had increased under the current government without a proportionate rise in revenue.
The ongoing investigation relates to alleged irregularities in the excise policy and liquor distribution system during 2019–2024. Courts have recorded allegations including preferential allocation of liquor brands and manipulation of supply procedures, while the SIT has continued its probe.
Govardhan Reddy said the YSRC would pursue what he described as the earlier liquor case and seek accountability from those allegedly involved in targeting the party’s leaders and cadre.
