Vijayawada: The major rivers, Godavari and Krishna, are in spate following heavy rainfall in upstream catchment areas and huge inflow of water from upstream areas.
The district administrations have sounded a high alert for those living downstream or along the course of the rivers and in low-lying areas. They have been warned of inundation of villages and crops over thousands of acres.
The Godavari was rising rapidly. The water discharge from the Sir Arthur Cotton Barrage at Dowleswaram was recorded 8.53 lakh cusecs downstream into the sea at 10pm. The water levels were rising on Wednesday night.
The water authorities may issue the first flood warning if and when the level at the barrage touches the 11.75 feet.
There has been a huge inflow of water into Krishna river from upstream Srisailam, Nagarjuna Sagar and Pulichintala projects. The river’s water level was rising steadily and it crossed 4.73 lakh cusecs by Wednesday evening.
The high alert continues all along the river’s course downstream and also on both upstream and downstream of the barrage.
