Godavari Districts Experience Intermittent Rains

Kakinada: The people of Kakinada, Konaseema, Eluru, East and West Godavari districts experienced intermittent rains on Monday due to a low-pressure formation on the Bay of Bengal.

Throughout the day, the sky was overcast. There was some respite as the rain stopped in the afternoon. Government schools were closed while the private schools declared a half-day holiday. Many areas in Katrenikona, Uppalaguptam, Mummidivaram, P Gannavaram, Razole and other mandals in Konaseema district were flooded. Panchayat teams attempted to drain out the water from the low-lying areas.

Konaseema collector Mahesh Kumar advised fishermen not to go for fishing in the sea, rivers and canals. He advised people living in low-lying areas to remain alert. “There is a possibility of heavy rains for the next three days,” he said and asked officials too to remain alert.

According to IMD, there were chances of gusty winds and moderate to heavy rains in the district. The collector said a control room (08856293104) has been set up in the collector’s office for rain-related relief works. It would function round the clock. He urged the people not to come out of their houses, unless an emergency situation arose.

The AP disaster management authority said the cyclone may cross South Odisha and North Andhra coast on Tuesday morning but there can be winds of 40-60km speed. Fishermen and the people should not go fishing. They must avoid entering the rivers, sea and the water bodies.

But, according to Head Works engineering officials, 6,07,682 cusecs of excess water was discharged to the sea around 9pm on Monday night.

The Rajamahendravaram RDO Krishna Naick asked officials to be ready to shift 198 families belonging to Kethavari Lanka, Vedurlanka, Bridge Lanka and other islet villages in the division to rehabilitation centres if the flood situation worsened.

Eluru collector Vetri Selvi urged the people to take all precautionary steps due to heavy rains in the district. Control rooms have been opened in the collector’s office; and RDO offices and people can make use of it. The superintendent engineer of

APEPDCL Eluru circle, Solomon Raj, said the people should not go near electric poles, transformers, electric wires and other electric equipment. “Do not touch live wires that have fallen on the grounds and inform such events immediately to the 1912 number.”
