Gandhi Jayanti Draws Visitors To Gandhi Hill, Planetarium

The Gandhi Hill Foundation and AP Gandhi Smaraka Nidhi jointly organised the celebrations: Reports

VIJAYAWADA: Vijayawada’s Gandhi Hill witnessed grand celebrations on Friday to mark the 157th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, with visitors being allowed free entry to Gandhi Hill and the planetarium as part of the occasion.

The Gandhi Hill Foundation and AP Gandhi Smaraka Nidhi jointly organised the celebrations, presided over by foundation chairman Dr Gandhi P.C. Kaja. Former Union Vigilance Commissioner K.V. Chowdary, the chief guest, said Gandhi’s ideals of truth, non-violence, peace, harmony and service should be taken to the younger generation. Practising these values in daily life would be the real tribute to Gandhi, he said.

Gandhi Hill was kept open for free public visits from 10 am to 8.30 pm on Friday. Planetarium shows were held every hour from 10 am, with students also being given free access.

A series of programmes had been organised during the past week to mark Gandhi Jayanti. Winners of competitions conducted for school and college students were presented prizes during the celebrations.

IIT Hyderabad director B.S. Murty, Efftronics Systems Pvt. Ltd. CEO D. Ramakrishna and other dignitaries attended the programme. Floral tributes were paid to Gandhi’s portrait, and his contribution to the freedom movement was recalled.

Books, ‘Bhoomi Navvali’ by Belaga Bhimeswara Rao and ‘Bejawadalo Gandhiji’ by Dr G.V. Purnachand, were also released.

The celebrations also featured plant-growing and home-composting demonstrations, Gandhi-themed artworks made with vegetables and fruits, terrace-garden produce and artistic items made from discarded materials.
