Bapatla: 6 Workers Killed at Granite Quarry

Police swiftly reached the scene and launched rescue operations.

Six migrant workers from Odisha state, working in a granite quarry, were killed and eight others were injured when boulders fell on them at Ballikurava village in Bapatla district on Sunday.

The incident occurred at the Satyakrishna quarry near Ballikurava village. A massive slab of granite fell during excavation activities, trapping several workers under the debris. The deceased were Danda Badatya (48), Takun Dalai (37), Banamala Chehr (30), Bhaskar Bhishoy (40), Santosh Goud (36) and Mussajana (43).
Bapatla SP, Tushar Dudi, said the mishap took place around 10am, when 16 workers were on-site. Four workers died on the spot due to the impact, while two others succumbed to their injuries en route to the Narasaraopet government general hospital. Three others, who received severe injuries, have been hospitalized in a critical condition.
The police and other departments started the rescue operations immediately after the incident. The bodies were recovered by late afternoon. Emergency teams, including police personnel, revenue officials and medical staff, rushed to the site.
According to reports, the quarry employed a significant number of migrant workers from Odisha, many of whom work under challenging and hazardous conditions. Officials said 16 workers were present when the mishap occurred.
The SP and officials from the mining department visited the site to assess the situation. Police registered a case and launched an investigation to determine whether safety protocols were in place. Officials observed that the edge of the quarry had weakened, leading to the rockslide.
Bapatla collector Venkata Murali visited the victims at a private hospital in Narasaraopet and spoke to the injured. He announced a compensation of `14 lakh each to the families of the deceased. A financial assistance of `10 lakh would be given to each of the seriously injured, apart from a financial assistance of `1 lakh each for those with minor injuries.
The government would bear the medical expenses of all the injured till their full recovery. The collector said, as advised by the chief minister, a criminal case would be registered against the quarry management and a comprehensive investigation would follow.
He quoted a preliminary report to say that granite boulders fell due to “the movement of soil in the quarry” due to previous day’s rain.
Steps would be taken to transport the bodies to their native places. Security measures would be strengthened in all quarries to prevent the recurrence of such incidents.
Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu expressed grief over the incident and sought a detailed report from the district administration. He directed officials to ensure that the injured received the best possible medical care, and called for an inquiry to determine the cause of the accident and identify lapses, if any.
