Former YSRC MLA Gets Police Notice Over ‘Objectionable’ Remarks On TD Legislator

Sub-Inspector Ranganath Goud delivered the notice at Prasanna Kumar’s residence on Monday night: Police

TIRUPATI: Former MLA and YSRC leader Nallapareddy Prasanna Kumar Reddy has been served a formal notice by the Kovur police in connection with a case registered against him for allegedly making objectionable remarks about sitting Telugu Desam (TD) MLA Vemireddy Prashanthi Reddy. The notice, issued under Section 35(3) of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), directs the former legislator to appear before the police for questioning on July 25.

Sub-Inspector Ranganath Goud delivered the notice at Prasanna Kumar’s residence on Monday night. According to the police, the case relates to a recent public meeting held at a Kalyana Mandapam in Kovur, where the YSRC leader reportedly made inappropriate and derogatory comments referencing the personal life of the TD MLA.

A case has been registered against him under several sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, including:

Section 74 (criminal force against a woman to outrage her modesty), Section 75 (unwelcome and explicit sexual overtures), Section 79 (insulting the modesty of a woman), Section 296 (obscene acts), Section 352 (provocation) and Section 353(2) (false information), along with relevant provisions of the Information Technology Act.

The Andhra Pradesh High Court, taking a serious view of the incident, declined to grant anticipatory bail to Prasanna Kumar. The court observed that his statements constituted a clear violation of the legal protections guaranteed to women. It also noted that his subsequent attempts to justify his remarks further weakened his plea.

The comments triggered widespread outrage across the constituency. Protests were staged by a large number of women in Kovur, while supporters of the TD and of Vemireddy Prabhakar Reddy and Prashanthi Reddy also held demonstrations condemning the statements. Protesters reportedly targeted the former MLA’s residence, causing damage to property. Police are continuing their investigation into the matter.
