TIRUPATI: The Red Sanders Special Court in Tirupati has sentenced two red sanders smugglers to five years’ imprisonment and a fine of `3 lakh each. Judge Narasimha Murthy delivered the verdict on Friday after the charges in Crime No. 05/2017 were proved.
The Red Sanders Anti-Smuggling Task Force (RSASTF) booked the accused during a 2017 operation in the Karakambadi beat of Tirupati district. The two men, Vellaiyan Shivaji and Mohan Shankar of Tiruvannamalai district in Tamil Nadu, were arrested while transporting red sanders illegally.
The case was pursued under the supervision of Task Force SP P. Srinivas, based on a special operational plan prepared by RSASTF Head L. Subba Rayudu. Special Public Prosecutor Aluguri Amara Narayana presented the witnesses and evidence that led to the conviction.
Following the court order, the two convicts were shifted to Nellore Central Jail. SP Srinivas said that the punishment should act as a warning to those attempting to enter the protected forests for smuggling red sanders. He appreciated the support extended by court staff and prosecution in ensuring the conviction.
