Five Killed in Multiple National Highway Crashes Near Ongole
Police have launched an investigation to known the reasons behind the accidents
Nellore: A series of road accidents on National Highway 16 during the early hours of Sunday near Koppolu flyover in Prakasam district claimed five lives.
The accidents occurred around 4:50 a.m., involving three separate collisions along the Ongole–Nellore route within a 500-meter stretch, highlighting lack of safety on the busy highway.
In the first incident, a poultry-laden lorry crashed into a stationary vehicle and overturned; killing three people on the spot. Another lorry rammed into a parked car and a tractor nearby moments later. But this caused no injuries.
Soon, another speeding lorry rear-ended a car; killing two passengers immediately and injuring three others critically.
The deceased in the poultry lorry crash case have been identified as Ravinuthala Babu, 42, and Ravinuthala Nagendra, 20, cleaners of the lorry from Gudipallipadu, apart from the lorry driver Shaik Rahim, 60, belonging to the Nellore Rural area.
Those killed in the car accident have been identified as Tammisetty Pavani, 35, and Tammisetty Kaushik. The three critically injured, including Tammisetty Venkateswarlu, 45, have been shifted to Ongole RIMS and Sanghamitra Hospital for treatment.
Soon after these accidents, police reached the three spots to carry out rescue operations and manage traffic, which remained built up over several hours.
Prakasam Superintendent of police A.R. Damodar visited the site of the accidents and assessed the situation along with Deputy Transport Commissioner R. Suseela and senior police officers.
The SP called for strict enforcement of speed limits and traffic rules. He directed police to identify accident-prone zones, fix the infrastructural lapses in coordination with relevant departments and install warning signage.
Additional SP (Admin) K. Nageswara Rao, Ongole DSP R. Srinivasa Rao, taluka circle inspector Ajay Kumar, sub-inspectors and police staff, in addition to national highway officials accompanied SP Damodar.
