NELLORE: What began as a fatal road accident on the outskirts of Ongole turned into a major narcotics bust after police discovered nearly 250 kg of ganja concealed inside an abandoned goods vehicle.
According to police, 21-year-old Kadiyam Lokesh, a resident of Arava Colony in Ongole, had been riding his motorcycle towards Arava Colony when he rammed into an Eicher goods vehicle (TN69K-7354) that got stranded on the Dasarajupalli flyover due to an engine failure at around 10:30 pm on June 2. Lokesh suffered severe injuries and died on the spot. Following the death of Lokesh, the Eicher driver vanished from the spot.
Police registered a fatal road accident case under Section 106 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and have launched a search for the Eicher driver.
The case took a dramatic turn shortly after midnight when a team of Tamil Nadu police officers, who had been tracking the Eicher, arrived in Ongole. Following this, Ongole Taluk police inspector T. Vijay Krishna and his team conducted a detailed search of the vehicle.
During the inspection, police found nine bags of ganja hidden beneath a load of bran sacks. The seized contraband is estimated to weigh around 250 kilograms.
Police have seized both the ganja and the Eicher vehicle and have registered a case under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act against the absconding driver.
Efforts are on to trace the accused and identify the others involved in the smuggling network.
