Farmers stage road blockade, demand release of water

They demanded that irrigation department officials immediately release water to the tail-end farmlands under the Krishna delta ayacut

VIJAYAWADA: Farmers of Krishna delta ayacut, led by the Congress kisan cell and AP farmers association, on Sunday staged a rasta roko (blockade) on the Vatluru-Peddapadu road, protesting government apathy for irrigation.

They demanded that irrigation department officials immediately release water to the tail-end farmlands under the Krishna delta ayacut.

Congress kisan cell district leader and AP farmers association district secretary Rajanala Ram Mohan Rao, said farmers under Krishna delta ayacut are unable to transplant paddy saplings due to negligence of the irrigation department officials to release water.

The leaders said irrigation officials failed to complete the modernisation of the KE canal on time. The canal is choked with water hyacinth thereby denying tail-end farmers access to water. They alleged that thousands of acres in Peddapadu region are not receiving irrigation water, and around 3,000 acres under Vatluru ayacut are parched due to unavailability of water to irrigate the crops.
