Farmers Protest For Jobs At Maritime Varsity

The management has assured them that future vacancies would be filled by them, but they were still continuing the agitation: University officials

VISAKHAPATNAM: Farmers of the Vangali village of Sabbavaram mandal in Anakapalli district on Friday staged a protest in front of the main gate of Indian Maritime University, demanding jobs and additional compensation for the land which they gave for the establishment of the university.

The leaders said the management of the Indian Maritime University had agreed in the presence of MLA Panchakarla Ramesh Babu to provide jobs to the farmers who gave their lands in. However, they went back on their word and gave jobs to the outsiders, they said.

“We took up the matter with the MLA and the management several times, but there was no response. Hence, we are agitating at the gate cooking and protesting for the last five days,’’ they said, adding they would intensify the stir.

University officials said the management has assured them that future vacancies would be filled by them, but they were still continuing the agitation. They are demanding employment in housekeeping, gardening and security, the officials said.
