Family Ex-Communicated In Lopudi Village, Police Book Case On 5

According to sources, Botla Kanaka Rao, his wife and two children said they were unable to bear the social boycott imposed on them: Reports

KAKINADA: A family in Lopudi village of Musunuru mandal in Eluru district has alleged that it was ex-communicated by village elders, prompting them to record a selfie video expressing distress and fear over continued humiliation.

According to sources, Botla Kanaka Rao, his wife and two children said they were unable to bear the social boycott imposed on them. Kanaka Rao was earlier arrested by excise officials in connection with an arrack sale case and was remanded. After returning to Lopudi village, caste elders reportedly convened a panchayat, made him kneel as punishment and imposed a fine of ₹1 lakh.

When the family expressed its inability to pay the amount, the elders allegedly ex-communicated them and instructed villagers not to interact with the family. Distressed by the alleged ostracism, the family recorded a video seeking help.

Based on a complaint lodged by Kanaka Rao’s father, Musunuru police registered a case. Sub-inspector M. Chiranjeevi said cases have been booked against five persons in connection with the incident and efforts are on to trace the family members.
