Experts Attribute Recurring Quakes To Tectonic Activity At Gullakamma Fault

Nellore:Mild earthquakes shook parts of Prakasam district on Tuesday morning, causing panic among residents for a brief while.
Tremors lasting around two seconds were felt around 9:54am across Darshi, Podili, Kurichedu, and Mundlamur mandals. In Podili, people living in Raju Hospital Street, Bank Colony, and Islampeta rushed out of their homes.
In 2024, similar tremors were recorded in Darshi, Mundlamur and Tallur mandals, causing public concern over the area’s seismic stability.
No casualty or property damage have been reported this time. However, the recurring nature of these tremors is prompting increased attention from scientific authorities.
Former chief scientist at the National Geophysical Research Institute, Dr Srinagesh, said, “Following a 3.1-magnitude quake in Darshi on Dec 20, 2024, NGRI established seismological monitoring stations in the area.” On Tuesday’s 2.8-magnitude tremor, he attributed the cause to tectonic activity along the Gullakamma Fault.
Srinagesh said NGRI scientists are closely monitoring the phenomenon and continuing their research to understand the region’s seismic behavior and potential risks.
