Expert Panel To Discuss Junior Doctors’ Stipend Hike Today

The difference led to a deadlock in earlier talks between the government and the doctors

VIJAYAWADA: A five-member expert committee will meet at 5 pm on Thursday at the Health Wing head office in Mangalagiri to discuss a proposed hike in the stipend of interns, postgraduates and those pursuing super-speciality, MDS and DNB courses in modern medicine.

The committee is headed by the Health Secretary and includes the Director of medical education, director of secondary health, registrar of Dr NTR University of Health Sciences and the president or secretary of the AP Junior Doctors Association.

The committee was constituted by the state government following the intervention of the AP High Court, which directed that the junior doctors’ concerns be addressed within two weeks. The doctors had called off their agitation following the court’s intervention.

The government is understood to be considering a 10 per cent hike in the stipend, while the junior doctors have been seeking a 13 per cent increase. The difference led to a deadlock in earlier talks between the government and the doctors.
