Vijayawada: Retired IPS officer and former Director General of Police A.B. Venkateswara Rao is contesting the Vijayawada Municipal Corporation (VMC) mayoral election as an independent candidate, with the support of the CPM. The CPI, the Congress and several people’s organisations have also backed him and pledged joint action for the city’s development.
Speaking to the media, the former State Intelligence chief said his goal is to overhaul the systems in the municipal corporation and root out corruption.
As part of his campaign on Saturday, he led a large rally through Divisions 37, 38, 39, 40 and 41. The rally began at Urmila Nagar and drew leaders and workers from various political parties, who turned out in large numbers to show their support.
The mayoral election is likely to be a triangular contest, with Venkateswara Rao taking on the nominees of the NDA and the YSRCP in a fight for control of the city’s civic administration. Former MLA Vangaveeti Radhakrishna has filed his nomination as the Jana Sena candidate representing the NDA alliance, while former mayor Bhagyalakshmi is in the fray on behalf of the YSRCP.
