Energy Portfolio Management System to Be Piloted From Sept. 1
Chief Secretary urges utilities to cut costs and meet rising September demand

Vijayawada: Andhra Pradesh Chief Secretary K. Vijayanand has directed power utilities to maximise the use of hydel power generation during the rainy season to meet the State’s rising energy demand in September.
He announced that an Energy Portfolio Management System (EPMS) app—a pioneering, indigenously developed digital platform designed to transform short-term power procurement and bring operational efficiency—will be launched on a pilot basis from September 1. The results of the pilot will be studied for wider adoption with a focus on optimising power purchase costs.
Reviewing the power supply position with Managing Director APGENCO K.V.N. Chakradhar Babu, JMD APTRANSCO Kirthi Chekuri, APTRANSCO Directors A.K.V. Bhaskar, J.V. Rao, N.V. Ramana Murthy, APGENCO Directors M. Sujay Kumar, P. Ashok Kumar Reddy, CE Rajendra Prasad and other senior officials at the CS Camp Office virtually on Sunday, the Chief Secretary said that hydel generation, currently about 22 MU per day, could increase to nearly 26 MU with full operational efficiency. This, he emphasised, would significantly reduce dependence on costly market purchases while ensuring uninterrupted supply during the agricultural season.
Vijayanand stressed that every effort must be made to guarantee reliable power to agriculture, industry, and households during the peak agricultural and festive season. He instructed utilities to prepare contingency plans for sudden demand spikes, optimise power purchase costs, improve hydel utilisation and ensure prudent use of banked energy.
He also directed officials to strengthen consumer support and grievance redressal systems to enhance service reliability.
The Chief Secretary underscored the importance of advance planning for September and the upcoming festive season, noting that the September 2025 demand forecast prepared by APSLDC indicates daily energy requirements in the first week (Sept. 1–7) will range between 210 and 225 MU, with peak demand expected at 10,200–10,500 MW.
He said APGENCO’s hydel and thermal stations are expected to contribute over 100 MU per day, central generating stations about 35–40 MU per day, and renewables about 25–30 MU per day, depending on weather. In addition, the 326 MU banked in August would serve as a reserve to meet contingencies, while exchange purchases would be optimised by scheduling during low-price periods.
APGENCO officials further informed that hydel generation had crossed 2,000 MU by the end of August 2025—the highest in more than a decade.
