ECoR to Double Train Capacity in Bhubaneswar, Puri and Vizag by 2030
In Puri, two additional integrated pit lines are under construction, augmenting the existing six.

Visakhapatnam: East Coast Railway (ECoR) has unveiled an ambitious infrastructure expansion plan to double train originating capacity in Bhubaneswar, Puri and Visakhapatnam by 2030 to meet the rapid growth in passenger demand.
Union railway minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said the plan involves expansion of coaching terminals and enhancement of sectional and operational capacities to ease congestion and improve connectivity across the railway network.
In Puri, two additional integrated pit lines are under construction, augmenting the existing six. The entire coaching maintenance facility will be shifted to a new terminal depot on the sanctioned Puri–Konark line, where a large coaching complex is planned.
Bhubaneswar will see the development of the Bhubaneswar New Station as a satellite coaching terminal, with a two-pit-line maintenance facility at Mancheswar. Owing to space constraints, additional depots are proposed in nearby areas.
In Visakhapatnam, a detailed project report for yard modification — including five additional lines, six passenger platforms, ten stabling lines and electronic interlocking — is under consideration by the Railway Board. Jaganadhpuram station on the proposed Kottavalasa–Anakapalle bypass line will serve as a mega coaching maintenance depot.
Supporting infrastructure works include automatic block signalling and flyovers in Puri, pit-line electrification and a fourth line in Bhubaneswar, and multiple line additions and bypass projects in Visakhapatnam.
The plan is part of Indian Railways’ nationwide initiative covering 48 major cities and will be implemented in phases through immediate, short-term and long-term measures, with benefits rolling out progressively over the next five years.
