Early Detection of Cancer Can Save Lives: SVIMS Director

SVIMS observed the ‘World Cancer Day’ at Sri Padmavathi Hospital in Tirupati on Tuesday. Dr Kumar highlighted the theme of this year’s World Cancer Day ‘United, We Are Unique’ and reaffirmed SVIMS' commitment to advanced cancer care.

Tirupati: Emphasising the importance of early detection and timely diagnosis in cancer treatment, Sri Venkateswara Institute of Medical Sciences (SVIMS) director and vice-chancellor Dr R.V. Kumar said cancer is no longer fatal if identified early and treated effectively.

SVIMS observed the ‘World Cancer Day’ at Sri Padmavathi Hospital in Tirupati on Tuesday. Dr Kumar highlighted the theme of this year’s World Cancer Day ‘United, We Are Unique’ and reaffirmed SVIMS' commitment to advanced cancer care. He announced that SVIMS is constructing a new cancer block featuring five state-of-the-art operation theatres.

“Bone marrow transplant services will soon be fully operational. To support early detection efforts in rural areas, SVIMS has introduced the Pink Bus initiative, which provides free cancer screening,” he added.

SVIMS dean Dr Alladi Mohan noted that the institution serves not just the Rayalaseema region but also patients from across the state. Radiation oncology associate professor Dr Srinivasa Rao spoke about cervical cancer, explaining that it is caused by the sexually transmitted Human Papillomavirus. He highlighted the importance of pap smear tests and radiation therapy in early-stage treatment.

Surgical oncologist Dr Teja addressed the growing incidence of breast cancer in both urban and rural areas. He advised women to watch for symptoms such as skin dimpling, lumps, and nipple abnormalities and seek medical attention immediately.

Medical Oncologist Dr. Mourya Reddy discussed lung cancer, which remains a leading cause of cancer-related deaths in both men and women. SVIMS medical superintendent Dr Ram, surgical oncology head Dr Surendra, radiation oncology head Dr Subramanian, medical oncology head Dr Advait, community medicine head Dr Nagaraju and community medicine specialist Dr Pratyusha were present at the event.
