VIJAYAWADA: Operation Safe Campus Zone, a comprehensive anti-drug initiative, has been successfully executed across all districts in Andhra Pradesh.
Stating this, DGP Harish Gupta said the operation was designed to eradicate illicit drug sales within 100 yards of educational institutions, with due regard to the guidelines of the ‘tobacco-free educational institutions’ framework.
The operation was held for five days, from July 8 to 12, covering all districts. It sought to check sale of narcotic drugs (including ganja), NRX, cough syrups, cigarettes, tobacco products and gutka near educational institutions. Some 16,806 establishments were under the scanner and 25,807 cases were registered across 26 districts. The highest number of cases --3,468 -- were registered in Visakhapatnam, followed by 3,115 in Kakinada and 4,015 in Prakasam districts.
The DGP said the operation involved intelligence-led targeting of hotspots within a 100-yard radius of educational institutions. There was coordination with the district police intelligence wing and special branch police. This also involved mandatory videography and legal compliance under relevant acts, he said.
“All the registered cases are being pursued for vigorous follow-up and prosecution, intelligence review. Surprise operations at identified hotspots would continue," he said.
