Drivers, Helpers Demand Resumption Of MDU Vehicles

The state government recently issued a G.O., abolishing MDU vehicles across the state, effective June 1, citing that the door delivery of ration rice was financially unviable.

VISAKHAPATNAM: The drivers and helpers of Mobile Dispensing Units (MDU) took out a rally in Visakhapatnam on Sunday, demanding that essential commodities be supplied through public distribution system (PDS) vehicles and that the drivers be provided employment. The rally, organised by the MDU Drivers Helpers Association of Visakhapatnam, started from the Gandhi statue opposite the GVMC office and passed through the RTC complex and LIC building, concluding back at the Gandhi statue.

YSRC Visakhapatnam district president K.K. Raju, former MLA Vasupalli Ganesh Kumar and Visakhapatnam East constituency party in-charge Molli Apparao, senior leaders and others participated in the rally.

KK. Raju said former chief minister Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy introduced the door delivery of ration supplies in 2021 to provide employment to 20,000 families, prevent irregularities in ration distribution and relieve ration cardholders from waiting in long queues at fair-price shops. “The initiative was successful to the extent that the governments of other states also showed interest in adopting it. However, the current state government has cancelled the programme solely because it brought a good name to Y.S. Jagan,’’ Raju said. He described this decision as the diversion politics of Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu, who failed to fulfil his poll promises even after one year in office.
