Down Memory Lane: SVU Reunion Marks CM’s Birthday
Teachers, classmates and childhood friends recalled Naidu’s student life

Tirupati: The Senate Hall at Sri Venkateswara University (SVU) turned into a ‘chamber of nostalgia’ on Sunday as Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu’s former teachers, classmates, childhood friends and early associates jointly celebrated his 75th birthday.
The event, organised by Sports Authority of Andhra Pradesh chairman Ravi Naidu, in coordination with SVU alumni, offered a reflection on the CM’s formative years and leadership journey.
The gathering brought together individuals, who had witnessed different stages of Naidu’s early life, from his school days in Chandragiri to his academic tenure at SVU. Many recalled him as a disciplined student with a strong sense of purpose, qualities that laid the foundation for his political career.
Retired professor KM Naidu, who taught the CM during his time as an economics student, described him as a serious and attentive learner, adding, “He was a voracious listener. Even in his youth, he had clarity of thought and a readiness to take responsibility.”
He also noted Naidu’s interest in agricultural research, including a ‘completed’ PhD thesis on Acharya NG Ranga.
Childhood friend Kothapalli Devaraj Naidu from Kandulavaripalli, who said he had closely observed Naidu throughout his life, described him as an embodiment of determination and patience. “He always aimed to become a leader and firmly believed in discipline and hard work,” he said.
He shared a memory from 1968 when they were caught travelling on trains without tickets after completing Class 10. He also noted the CM’s generosity during their hostel days -- recalling that Naidu once used money he got from the playing of cards to help poor students pay their exam fees.
Another friend, Bobba Dattatreya from Seshapuram, recalled studying alongside Naidu. “He had an exceptional memory and always took the lead in school-level community service. Even today, he remembers all of us by name,” he said.
Another classmate, Chandrasekhar Naidu, highlighted Naidu’s industrious nature. “He was active from a young age. He expanded his family’s five-acre landholding to 20 acres through hard work.” He also recalled their shared political mentorship under Rajagopal Reddy during their time at SVU.
Former MLA Reddivari Rajasekhar Reddy, who survived the Alipiri bomb blast along with Naidu in 2003, described the CM as a visionary leader focused on development. “In the current situation, there is no one more suited to lead the state,” he said.
SAAP chairman Ravi Naidu said the event aimed to help the younger generation connect with the life and values of a leader who rose from a modest background. SVU vice-chancellor Appa Rao, registrar Prof Bhupathi Naidu, former MLA A Mohan, and former VC, P Murali, were among those present.
