Dowleswaram Circle Canals to Be Closed in 2–3 Days

Officials to continue water release for 2–3 days to aid irrigation and fill tanks in the tail-end areas

Kakinada: Water Resources Department authorities of Dowleswaram circle will close canals within their areas within two or three days. The decision comes after collectors of Kakinada, Konaseema and Eluru districts have written to the Irrigation department about the necessity to release water to tail-end agricultural lands and water bodies along the route.

Konaseema district collector R. Mahesh Kumar told Deccan Chronicle that they have already filled water bodies. But the water is yet to reach tail-end areas, though 1,100 cusecs of water is being released presently. This water flow has to be continued if the second crop grown in tail-end lands is to survive.

In Konaseema district , there are 43 water tanks and they have been filled up to cater the needs of drinking water during this summer. However, in Eluru district, it will take another one week for the water tanks to fill up. MLAs of the district have requested officials to continue releasing water into the canals till the water tanks are filled up.

Under the Godavari area, there are 77 water tanks and majority of these tanks have been filled up. But under Krishna canals, it will take time to fill up all the 159 water tanks.

Rural Water Supply scheme officials said all efforts are being made to avoid a shortage of drinking water this year, as water storage is better when compared to last year.

In some mandals of Kakinada district, like Karapa, Tallarevu and Kajuluru, officials have decided to pump water using motors, so that tail-end lands could be irrigated.

Irrigation Head Works executive engineer R. Kasi Visweswara Rao said that daily, nearly 6,000 cusecs of water is being released into the three delta canals and also West Godavari district. This quantity of water will continue to be released for another two or three days.
