Doctors Leave Tube, Cotton Inside Woman’s Uterus After Delivery

Two assistant professors at Kakinada Government General Hospital were suspended after a tube and cotton were allegedly left inside a woman’s uterus following delivery.

Two assistant professors in the gynaecology department at the Government General Hospital, Kakinada, have been suspended after a tube and cotton allegedly used during a woman’s delivery were left inside her uterus and she was discharged without their removal.

The woman underwent a normal delivery at the hospital on September 26. When bleeding occurred during the procedure, doctors placed a tube and cotton inside her uterus. These were supposed to be removed before discharge, but were allegedly left inside.

After developing severe lower abdominal pain, the woman sought treatment at a private hospital, where doctors discovered the tube and cotton.

Hospital superintendent Dr Lavanya Kumari told Deccan Chronicle that the woman was discharged on September 30 but returned to the hospital on Saturday. After the problem was identified, she was treated on Sunday. She said action was taken against the doctors involved.

The Rangaraya Medical College principal P. Usha Kiran said two assistant professors in the gynaecology department, Dr Vamsi Priya and A. Sravanthi, were suspended.

A preliminary inquiry found that the postgraduate doctor on duty had recorded that the items had been removed from inside the woman when they had not been. The gynaecologists discharged the woman after checking the register, she said.

Dr Usha said action would be taken against the postgraduate doctor.

Following a complaint lodged by the woman’s family, Kakinada collector M.N. Harendhira Prasad ordered a probe.
