TIRUPATI: A dispute between the family members of two wives over the mortal remains of a retired Transco DE led to a protest at SVIMS Hospital in Tirupati on Wednesday night.

Subrahmanyam (76), a resident of Chittoor Kandriga in Narayanavanam mandal, had been suffering from health issues for the past three years. As his condition worsened recently, his second wife, Janaki, along with their son, Naveen Kumar, admitted him to SVIMS for treatment. However, he passed away on Wednesday.

Upon learning of his demise, Padma, Subrahmanyam’s first wife, who resides in Tirupati, rushed to the hospital with her son, Ravi. She approached SVIMS authorities, asserting that as the legal wife, she had the right to claim her husband’s mortal remains. However, the second wife’s family and local villagers opposed this, demanding that the body be handed over to them.

This led to a heated confrontation between the two families. The second wife’s relatives and local villagers staged a protest outside SVIMS, insisting that the body be given to them. The situation escalated until Tirupati West Circle Inspector Murali Mohan and his team arrived at the scene.

The police intervened, pacified the protestors, and urged both parties to resolve the matter amicably. They also clarified that the body would only be handed over after mutual agreement between the two families.
