Vijayawada:The diarrhoea situation in Vuyyuru municipality of Krishna district is under control, with 19 cases reported between August 19 and 23 and no deaths, according to a preliminary report submitted to health minister Satya Kumar Yadav.

Of the 19 patients with severe diarrhoeal symptoms, 15 were admitted to Vuyyuru Community Health Centre. Six have been discharged and nine remain under treatment, with all patients reported to be stable. The remaining four are receiving outpatient or home-based treatment.

A state medical team and a Rapid Response Team comprising specialists from Siddhartha Medical College, Vijayawada, inspected the affected areas on Sunday.

The cases have been confined to Wards 5, 7 and 9, with the first case reported from Srilanka Colony in Ward 5 on August 19. Two medical camps have been functioning since August 20, while 10 teams have been conducting door-to-door surveillance since August 19.

Officials are focusing on drinking water after residents complained of changes in its taste and odour. Twenty-nine water samples were collected from the affected wards and stool samples from patients were sent for laboratory tests. Officials said the exact cause would be known only after bacteriological, culture, sensitivity and microscopy reports are received.

A preliminary field inquiry found that some patients had consumed food from outside before developing symptoms. Officials are also examining possible contamination of a community drinking-water source.

Water sources in the affected areas have been chlorinated and tankers are supplying alternative drinking water. ORS and zinc tablets are being distributed, while adequate IV fluids and emergency medicines have been stocked at the Vuyyuru CHC.

Commissioner of health and family welfare KVN Chakradhar Babu directed officials to continue intensive surveillance and ensure prompt treatment. ANMs and ASHA workers are conducting door-to-door surveys under the supervision of senior doctors.

Officials said most patients were aged 40–60 years and there was no evidence of person-to-person transmission or spread to neighbouring villages. The district medical and health department, District Surveillance Unit and Rapid Response Teams are continuing to monitor the situation.
