Cyber Fraudsters Posing As ACB Officer Dupe Retired Official Of ₹2 Lakh
The victim, Y. Venkataramana, a retired deputy city planner of Kurnool Municipal Corporation, received a call from an unidentified person on August 20.
TIRUPATI: Cyber fraudsters posing as an Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) officer allegedly threatened a retired municipal official in Tirupati and made him transfer ₹2 lakh online. Alipiri police have registered a case and launched an investigation.
The victim, Y. Venkataramana, a retired deputy city planner of Kurnool Municipal Corporation, received a call from an unidentified person on August 20. The caller introduced himself as an ACB deputy superintendent of police and alleged that complaints had been received accusing Venkataramana of accepting bribes during his service.
The caller allegedly demanded Rs 5 lakh and threatened to report the matter to senior officials and stop his pension benefits if he failed to pay. Fearing the consequences, Venkataramana transferred Rs 2 lakh online to a phone number provided by the caller.
The following day, another caller demanded the remaining Rs 3 lakh. Venkataramana then realised that he had been cheated and approached Alipiri police.
Police registered a case under relevant provisions and are investigating with the assistance of the cybercrime wing. A special team is tracing the accused and examining the financial transactions.
