Visakhapatnam: Residents and CPM leaders planted saplings in potholes at Dondapudi in Ravikamatham mandal of Anakapalle district on Saturday to protest the poor condition of BN Road connecting Chodavaram and Narsipatnam.
They demanded immediate repairs and resumption of stalled road works.
Protesters said nearly 400 potholes dot a three-kilometre stretch, making travel hazardous, particularly for pregnant women, elderly passengers and patients travelling to Narsipatnam Area Hospital.
They alleged that road works launched by the local MLA at Rolugunta on September 6 stalled within three days, with only about 50 metres completed.
An assurance to finish the project in the first week of October also remained unfulfilled, they said.
The protesters questioned the delay despite earlier assurances from Roads and Buildings Department officials that the work would be completed by the end of September.
They also complained of dust pollution along partially completed stretches near Medivada and Garnikam, alleging that it was causing respiratory problems.
CPM leaders urged MP C. M. Ramesh to intervene and expedite the project.
They announced plans for a padayatra through Rolugunta and other affected villages, warning that the agitation would continue until the potholes were filled and the road properly tarred.
They also sought temporary repairs to ensure safe travel.
CPM district executive member K. Govinda Rao led the protest. CPM leaders Sederi Kameswara Rao and Kurra Balaraju, along with local residents, participated.
