Court Allows SIT Probe Into Dalit Youth Subrahmanyam’s Murder

SC/ST Court greenlights SIT probe into Dalit youth Veedhi Subrahmanyam's murder involving ex-YSRC MLC Ananta Babu

KAKINADA: The SC, ST Atrocities Prevention Court Judge Singavarapu Uma Sunanda has permitted a Special Investigation Team (SIT) constituted by the state government to conduct a detailed probe into the murder case of Dalit youth Veedhi Subrahmanyam, the former driver of YSRC MLC Ananta Udaya Bhaskar (Ananta Babu). The Judge also directed the SIT to submit a supplementary charge sheet within 90 days.

Ananta Babu allegedly murdered Subrahmanyam on the night of May 19, 2022, and handed over the body to his family in Kakinada. He was arrested by the then Kakinada police and remanded but later secured bail from the Supreme Court.
The deceased’s family has requested a CBI probe, alleging that the previous YSRC government tried to suppress the case by exerting pressure on the police. Despite a statement from the then Superintendent of Police V. Ravindranath Babu confirming the MLC's involvement, they claim the investigation was mishandled.
They noted that the victim sustained 31 internal injuries, indicating others may have been involved. They also alleged the investigating officers failed to examine crucial technical evidence such as tower location data and Google Takeout.
After reviewing the family’s appeal, the current alliance government formed an SIT, appointing human rights activist and AP Bar Council member Muppalla Subba Rao as legal advisor. Kakinada SP G. Bindu Madhav named ASP Manish Devaraj Patil as SIT head.
Public prosecutors K. Radhakrishna Raju and D.S. Vani presented arguments on Tuesday seeking permission for the special probe, which the Judge approved. Advisor Subba Rao supported the arguments during the hearing.
