A police constable from Anantapur was allegedly cheated of ₹23.67 lakh by a man who posed as a woman through a fake social media profile and gained his trust over several months.
According to fourth town police, the victim, attached to the DSP office in Anantapur, received a friend request on Facebook from a profile under the name Valmiki Saisree. After accepting the request, he remained in regular contact with the person through chats and phone conversations.
Police said the accused gradually developed a close friendship with the constable and allegedly sought financial assistance on various pretexts, including medical emergencies involving his parents. The fraudster also claimed to own a valuable house site in Dharmavaram and promised to repay the money after selling the property.
Believing the claims, the constable transferred around ₹23.67 lakh in multiple transactions. He reportedly even pledged his wife's gold ornaments to arrange funds.
When the promised repayments failed to materialise, the constable became suspicious and conducted inquiries. He later discovered that the person behind the profile was not a woman but a man.
Following a complaint, police identified the accused as Talari Venkatesh of Pothukunta in Dharmavaram town of Sri Sathya Sai district. A case has been registered and efforts are on to trace and arrest the accused.
Reckless bike stunts by youth trigger panic in Kadapa
Reckless motorcycle stunts by youngsters on busy roads in Kadapa city are causing growing concern among residents, pedestrians and motorists. Despite repeated warnings from police, such incidents continue to occur, posing serious risks to public safety.
In a recent incident near RIMS and Shilparamam, a group of youths performed dangerous stunts on motorcycles, alarming passersby. Concerned residents alerted police by dialling 100. Acting swiftly, RIMS police reached the spot, detained the youths and later summoned their parents to the police station. The youngsters were counselled for nearly two hours.
Police recalled that a similar stunt attempt in March near Madina Engineering College resulted in the death of a youth while filming a social media video.
Circle Inspector Rajagopal warned that strict action would be taken against repeat offenders and urged parents to closely monitor their children to prevent such dangerous behaviour.
Kurnool cops up ATM security during nights
Kurnool district police have intensified security and surveillance at bank ATM centres during night hours to prevent thefts, card skimming and cyber frauds, superintendent of police S. Vikrant Patil said.
The SP noted that incidents involving ATM cash thefts, card cloning and other cyber-related offences have been reported in recent times. To curb such crimes, police have launched special monitoring measures across the district.
Officials have been directed to conduct regular inspections of ATMs under their respective police station limits and take immediate action if any suspicious persons or objects are found. Bank authorities have also been advised to ensure that CCTV cameras, alarm systems and other security equipment are functioning properly and that adequate security personnel are deployed.
“We have strengthened surveillance at all ATMs, particularly during night hours. Police teams will conduct frequent checks and strict action will be taken against offenders,” Vikrant Patil said.
He urged customers to safeguard their PIN numbers, avoid accepting assistance from strangers and remain alert while using ATMs. The public has been asked to report suspicious activities near ATM centres by contacting the nearest police station or dialling 112/100.
Four children shifted to shelter home after mom’s arrest
Four children were shifted to a shelter home after their mother was arrested in connection with the death of her husband at Peddapeta village in Yadiki mandal of Anantapur district.
According to police sources, Shivaprasad and Himavathi had four children and were living in the village. Shivaprasad was allegedly addicted to alcohol and frequently harassed his wife for money to buy liquor.
Police said a domestic quarrel took place a few days ago during which Himavathi allegedly assaulted her husband. Shivaprasad later died. Initially, the family claimed that he had died due to excessive alcohol consumption. However, during the investigation, police suspected foul play and registered a case against Himavathi.
Following her arrest by Yadiki police, the couple's four children were left without parental care. As no close relatives came forward to look after them, Yadiki Inspector K. Srinivasulu arranged for their admission to a nearby shelter home. The incident highlights the severe impact of domestic disputes on children and families.
Vizag techie dies under mysterious circumstances in Uttarakhand
A software engineer from Visakhapatnam died under mysterious circumstances while on a holiday in Uttarakhand with her husband, police sources said on Tuesday.
The deceased was identified as P. Radha Gayatri, who was working in Gurgaon. She had married Sri Charan on November 8 last year. The couple was staying at a homestay on the Mussoorie-Dhanaulti road when the incident occurred.
According to preliminary information, Sri Charan told police that the couple had attended a party on Sunday night and went to sleep late. He allegedly found his wife unconscious in the room early on Monday morning, with blood oozing from her nose. He immediately alerted local authorities.
Medical personnel and police rushed to the spot, but Radha Gayatri was declared dead. As the circumstances surrounding the death appeared suspicious, senior police officials ordered a detailed investigation.
Authorities directed a panel of doctors to conduct the post-mortem examination and videograph the entire procedure to ensure transparency in the inquiry.
Meanwhile, Radha Gayatri's parents, residents of Chinamushidiwada in Pendurthi mandal of Visakhapatnam district, rushed to Mussoorie after receiving the news. Police said the exact cause of death would be known only after the post-mortem and forensic reports are received.
Jana Sena worker dies after falling from terrace
A 34-year-old man died after allegedly falling from the terrace of his house at Sankhavaram village in Kakinada district during the early hours of Tuesday.
The deceased was identified as Kurre Rama Chakra Dora, a mason by profession and an active Jana Sena worker. According to local sources, Chakra Dora was sleeping on the terrace of his house on Monday night. When it began raining suddenly, he reportedly attempted to move indoors in a hurry and accidentally fell from the terrace.
Family members and neighbours were unaware of the incident until Tuesday morning, when he was found lying unconscious. He is believed to have died on the spot due to severe injuries sustained in the fall. The incident plunged the village into mourning. Residents said Chakra Dora belonged to a poor family and was the sole breadwinner. His wife is pregnant.
Villagers have appealed to the coalition government to extend financial assistance to the bereaved family, considering their difficult economic condition and the loss of their primary source of income.
Panchayat official caught accepting ₹40,000 bribe
Officials of the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) on Tuesday caught a panchayat official allegedly accepting a bribe of ₹40,000 at Veldurthi in Kurnool district. The accused was identified as Lakshmikantam, panchayat development officer of Veldurthi mandal. According to ACB officials, he allegedly demanded the bribe from a resident for granting permission to construct a house.
The complainant approached the ACB after the officer reportedly insisted on payment to process the building approval. Acting on the complaint, ACB officials laid a trap and caught the accused red-handed while he was accepting the bribe amount.
The tainted cash was recovered from the possession of the official during the operation. Following the trap, Lakshmikantam was taken into custody for questioning.
