Congress demands Caste Census in Andhra Pradesh

She said that the BJP was trying to spread propaganda that the Congress was conspiring to abolish the reservation system when Congress MP Rahul Gandhi was demanding a caste census across the nation

AP Congress Committee chief YS Sharmila demanded that Caste Census should be taken up in the state, like in neighbouring Telangana.

She described Caste Census in Telangana as a historical milestone and said that a similar exercise should be taken up in Andhra Pradesh too. "In the total 5.5 crore population in the state, the authorities should knowledge about how many people belong to the backward classes. It should be calculated," she tweeted.

Training her guns against the previous government, Sharmila reminded that the YSRC government took up caste census but the former Chief Minister Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy hid the results. Jagan Mohan Reddy took all measures to ensure that the details of the caste census, she alleged and added that it was done under the direction of the BJP leaders.

She said that the BJP was trying to spread propaganda that the Congress was conspiring to abolish the reservation system when Congress MP Rahul Gandhi was demanding a caste census across the nation.

She suggested that Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu should not fall into the trap of the BJP-led NDA government.

She urged the TDP coalition government to identify the castes which were facing discrimination and that the same should be revealed to the public.

Once the figures are out, the state government should take up measures to ensure that those communities get a fair share in politics, society, education and employment.

She also demanded reservations to the discriminated communities basing on the percentage in the population.
