College Student Suspended After Assaulting Lecturer Over Confiscated Phone

“When the student ignored multiple warnings, the faculty member confiscated the phone as per institutional policy,” the college stated, referencing the viral video.

Visakhapatnam: A second-year ECE student from Raghu Engineering College has been suspended after a viral video showed her verbally abusing and physically assaulting a faculty member on April 22.

The student, identified as G. Venkata Lakshmi, reportedly became aggressive when her mobile phone was confiscated during class. According to college authorities, the confrontation began after repeated warnings about talking loudly on her phone during lecture hours.

“When the student ignored multiple warnings, the faculty member confiscated the phone as per institutional policy,” the college stated, referencing the viral video.

Witnesses said Lakshmi responded with verbal abuse before escalating to physical aggression, including throwing her slipper at the lecturer. The footage quickly circulated across social media, attracting widespread condemnation.

The college management has set up an investigative committee to probe the incident. “The committee will submit its findings and recommend appropriate disciplinary action as per our institutional policies,” said a college official.

In the meantime, the institution has suspended Lakshmi with immediate effect, citing "abusive behaviour and physical assault against a faculty member" as grounds for the action.
