CM Naidu’s Efforts for Better Water Management Yield Results

Officials said that as Krishna river received floods last month, they diverted the floodwater to the Rayalaseema region.

Vijayawada: Chief Minister Nara Chandrababu Naidu’s commitment to develop irrigation sources to supply water to all the regions of the state are yielding good results.

As part of this, Naidu directed the officials to see that every drop of water was saved. In this connection, the state government prepared an action plan to store the water in reservoirs and release it through canals to downstream tanks and agricultural fields.

Officials said that as Krishna river received floods last month, they diverted the floodwater to the Rayalaseema region. With efficient water management, the farmers of Krishna delta utilized 52tmc of water from June 1 till August 25, today, which was 12tmc more than the previous years’ usage.

In Godavari delta, 70tmc of water was released for agricultural purposes. As a total 650tmc of water was stored in major reservoirs by August 24 including 15tmc in Veligodu, 56tmc in Somasila, 31tmc in Kandaleru and 8tmc in Vamsadhara basin Gotta barrage.

At the initiative of the CM, 150tmc of water was released through the Potireddypadu, Handri-Neeva and Nagarjuna Sagar right canal to the Rayalaseema region, providing irrigation facility to one lakh acres. The Krishna water reached the tail end areas of Chittoor district including Kuppam branch canal with widening of Handri-Neeva canals.

The officials stated that though the state government was making efforts to utilize every available opportunity to utilize floodwater, some 1969tmc of water flowed into sea from Krishna, Godavari and Penna rivers-- including 1483tmc of Godavari water, 468tmc of Krishna water, 18tmc of Vamsadhara.

The state government has been making efforts to utilize surplus floodwater which is flowing into the sea, by developing new projects.
