CM Chandrababu Naidu Urges Use of Idols Made From Natural Seeds And Clay
Naidu noted that POP idols contain chemicals like gypsum, sulfur, phosphorus and magnesium, which severely pollute water bodies and threaten aquatic life

VIJAYAWADA: Chief Minister Nara Chandrababu Naidu has emphasized the importance of worshipping Ganesh idols made from clay or from natural seeds rather than using harmful Plaster of Paris (POP) idols.
The state pollution control board has undertaken a campaign across the state to ensure an eco-friendly celebration of Ganesh Chaturthi. A special poster carrying key environmental messages was unveiled by the chief minister at the state secretariat. The event was also attended by APPCB member secretary S Saravanan and chairman P Krishnayya.
Naidu noted that POP idols contain chemicals like gypsum, sulfur, phosphorus and magnesium, which severely pollute water bodies and threaten aquatic life. He urged everyone to avoid environmental damage by opting for eco-friendly idols.
Officials explained that APPCB allocated nearly `44 lakh to its zonal and regional offices and issued strict instructions to all district collectors for eco-friendly immersion practices, aligned with the pollution control board guidelines. Temporary artificial ponds have been recommended to prevent pollution of water reservoirs. Nearly three lakh clay idols have been distributed across district headquarters and rural areas.
In a novel approach, Srikakulam district officials have launched a door-to-door distribution programme for clay idols to encourage wider adoption. Additionally, prizes are being awarded for creative videos promoting plastic-free Ganesh idols.
The APPCB and NTR district officials organised an event at the IGMC Stadium in Vijayawada, where 7,500 clay Ganesh idols were crafted in a single day, earning recognition in the World Book of Records.
