CM Chandrababu Congratulates Ajaya Babu On CWG Weightlifting Silver

Weightlifting continued to be India's richest source of medals as 21-year-old Valluri Ajaya Babu clinched silver in the men's 79kg category after a gripping duel with Malaysia's Erry Hidayat Muhammad.

Amaravati: Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu on Tuesday congratulated weightlifter V Ajaya Babu on winning the silver medal in the men's 79 kg event at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games.Naidu said Babu had carried forward a proud sporting legacy by following in the footsteps of his father, V Srinivasa Rao, a Commonwealth Games bronze medallist.

"May he continue to lift India's sporting excellence on the global stage," the chief minister said in a post on X.
He said Babu's outstanding achievement had brought pride to both Andhra Pradesh and the nation.
Wishing Babu continued success in his sporting career, Naidu expressed hope that the weightlifter's achievement would inspire aspiring athletes across the state.

The Andhra Pradesh lifter totalled 330kg (149kg snatch and 181kg clean and jerk), narrowly missing the gold by a kilogram after Hidayat finished with a Games record total of 331kg (147kg and 184kg).
The duo repeatedly rewrote the Games records during an enthralling clean-and-jerk contest before the Malaysian sealed victory with his final lift.
Babu's silver took India's weightlifting tally to six medals at the Games.

The minister for MSME Kondapalli Srinivas on Tuesday congratulated Valluri Ajay Babu of Vizianagaram district for winning the silver medal and felicitated Ajay Babu's father, Valluri Srinivasa Rao, at his camp office. Srinivasa Rao, a renowned weightlifting coach, has trained hundreds of athletes who have gone on to achieve success in the sport.

Praising the family's sporting legacy, the Minister noted that Srinivasa Rao had himself won a medal at the Commonwealth Games held in New Delhi. He said Ajay Babu had carried forward his father's legacy by winning a silver medal and bringing national recognition to Vizianagaram district.

"First the father and now the son—both have etched the name of Vizianagaram on the international sporting stage," the Minister said.

Kondapalli Srinivas also spoke to Ajay Babu over a video call and personally congratulated him on his achievement.
