VISAKHAPATNAM: Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu has announced an ex-gratia payment of ₹10 lakh each to the families of those who lost their lives in a gas cylinder explosion near the Fishing Harbour in Visakhapatnam on August 7.
While announcing the compensation, the Chief Minister instructed officials to ensure improved medical care for those who sustained burns in the incident.
The deceased have been identified as Ganesh, Srinu, and Mutyalu. The injured Yellaji, Sanyasi Rao, and Ranga Rao are undergoing treatment at KGH is reported to be critical. One person has been shifted to a private hospital for advanced care.
Inspector G.D. Babu from the One-Town police station stated that this is not the first such incident, noting that they have repeatedly warned against the use of domestic cylinders for purposes other than cooking. “People combine domestic cylinders with oxygen cylinders, often for cutting iron. This can cause fire backflows leading to such accidents,” he said.
A case of accidental death has been registered, and an investigation is underway to ascertain whether negligence was involved. The crime scene investigation team is collecting evidence, and a report will be submitted shortly.
