Cleanliness is Everyone’s Responsibility, Says MLA Rammohan

He also stressed segregation of wet and dry waste at source and called for a ban on single-use plastics

VIJAYAWADA: Vijayawada Municipal Corporation (VMC) conducted awareness drives across the city under the Andhra Pradesh government’s Swarna Andhra–Swachh Andhra programme to promote sanitation and hygiene.

The programmes were held at Cholera Hospital in Circle-1, Octap School in Circle-2 and Govindarajulu School in Patamata in Circle-3 under the supervision of VMC additional commissioner Dr D. Chandrasekhar.

East MLA Gadde Rammohan, who attended the programme at Patamata as chief guest, said cleanliness was the responsibility of every citizen and urged residents to make hygiene part of their daily lives.

He called for responsible disposal of waste generated at homes, offices, schools and commercial establishments and urged people not to dump garbage on roads, drains or public spaces. He also stressed segregation of wet and dry waste at source and called for a ban on single-use plastics.

“By keeping surroundings clean—roads, drains, parks, and water bodies—we can prevent diseases and create a healthier environment,” he noted.

Dr Chandrasekhar said household surveys were being conducted in all wards to create awareness about sanitation and waste management. Details of hotels, hospitals, schools, apartments and commercial complexes were being collected and geo-tagged.

He said awareness meetings with stakeholders would be held to promote scientific waste management, segregation and plastic control. He also urged residents to adopt home composting, conserve rainwater through soak pits and keep public spaces free of plastic.

Former corporator Mummaneni Venkataprasad, chief engineer P. Satyakumari, zonal commissioners K. Shammi, K. Prabhudas and N. Srinivas, chief medical health officer (in-charge) Dr Gopala Naik, engineers, horticulture officials, medical officers, CDVOs and other staff participated.

The leaders appealed to citizens, public representatives, educational institutions, voluntary organisations and community groups to support the programme as a daily civic responsibility.
