NELLORE: Keeping coastal areas clean is essential to protect the marine ecosystem and provide a healthy environment for future generations, said Dr C. Kanakaraj, a representative of the Union ministry of environment, forest and climate change.
He was speaking at a beach-cleaning programme at Mypadu Beach in Indukurpet mandal on Saturday, organised under the Centre’s ‘Swachh Sagar, Surakshit Sagar’ campaign by the Andhra Pradesh Pollution Control Board (APPCB) and National Institute of Ocean Technology (NIOT).

APPCB Nellore SE Ashok Kumar said environmental protection was crucial for human survival and that the campaign aimed to promote cleaner beaches along the state’s coastline. He stressed the need for greater public awareness and responsible behaviour.
He said preventing coastal pollution was also important for protecting marine life and sustaining Andhra Pradesh’s seafood export sector.
District tourism officer Ali said clean beaches would make coastal destinations more attractive to tourists and urged people to take responsibility for maintaining them.
Employees of various industries and representatives of fishermen’s welfare associations participated in the drive.
