Chief Information Commissioner Seeks Probe Into Police Station Entry Row

Srinivasa Rao described the incident as arbitrary, illegal and an unwarranted interference in the functioning of a statutory authority established under the RTI Act.

Vijayawada:Andhra Pradesh State Chief Information Commissioner Vajja Srinivasa Rao has sought a probe into the alleged denial of entry to Medikonduru police station while he and his team were inspecting records under the Right to Information (RTI) Act.

In a letter to the Director General of Police Harish Kumar Gupta, the Chief information commissioner said he and officials of the AP Information Commission visited the police station in Guntur district on July 13 to inspect RTI records and review compliance with the Right to Information Act, 2005.

He alleged that Station House Officer/Circle Inspector Madhusudhan Rao, along with other police personnel, prevented them from entering the police station by locking the main entrance. According to the letter, the officer told them he had been instructed by the Superintendent of Police not to allow anyone into the station without prior permission.

Srinivasa Rao described the incident as arbitrary, illegal and an unwarranted interference in the functioning of a statutory authority established under the RTI Act.

He further stated that obstructing public servants in the lawful discharge of their duties could attract provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023, besides amounting to serious misconduct under the applicable conduct and disciplinary rules governing police personnel.
