Centre Sanctions Rs 14 Crore for BR Stadium; Guntur's Sporting Future Gets a Fillip

The central sports has also promised swift final clearance once the state government submits a revised proposal aligned with scheme guidelines within the stipulated time-frame.

Vijayawada: In a major boost to sports infrastructure in the district, the Centre has accorded in-principle approval for release of Rs 14 crore for development of the Brahmananda Reddy (BR) Stadium in Guntur.

The sanction, under the Khelo India scheme, marks a decisive step forward after years of wait. This fulfills a recent assurance given by Union minister of state for rural development and communications, Pemmasani Chandrasekhar.

The approval forms part of AP’s comprehensive Rs 170-crore proposal submitted to the central government for strengthening the sports infrastructure across the state. Specifically, the sports ministry has cleared funding for construction of a modern multi-sports complex at the BR Stadium, with dimensions of 60 metres by 40 metres and a height of 12.5 metres.

Additional components of the project would be taken up in phases, with funds to be mobilised stage by stage, Pemmasani said.

The stadium’s development would mean international-standard sports facilities for Guntur, providing a strong platform to identify and nurture young sporting talent. Officials believe the upgraded infrastructure would help athletes from the region compete at national and international levels, enhancing the opportunities for local youth.

The central sports has also promised swift final clearance once the state government submits a revised proposal aligned with scheme guidelines within the stipulated time-frame.

Reiterating the government’s commitment to reviving stalled projects, Pemmassani said delayed development works in Guntur would be brought back on track.

He expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union sports minister Mansukh Mandaviya and others for their support in promoting sports and infrastructure development in the district.
