Central Jail to Supply Sanitary Napkins to Women Prisoners Across Andhra Pradesh

Initiative boosts hygiene, skills, and income for prisoners

Visakhapatnam: A sanitary napkin manufacturing unit has been established in the women's block of Visakhapatnam Central Jail. It would supply the product to women prisoners across the state.

This represents a significant advancement in improving menstrual hygiene and empowering women in prison. The unit would operate in collaboration with a voluntary, non-governmental organisation.

According to jail superintendent Mahesh Babu, the primary goal is to enhance the health, hygiene and dignity of women inmates while also equipping them with practical skills. The unit would produce high-quality sanitary napkins using raw materials that are free from harmful chemicals.

The production unit provides financial incentives to participating inmates, contributing to their rehabilitation and self-sufficiency. Two trainers with prior experience in this trade are guiding the participants. The hygienically produced napkins undergo four rounds of quality testing to ensure safety and quality.

Jail officials said they aim to replicate this model in other prisons.
