Cabinet Clears Gummidipoondi-Gudur 3rd, 4th Rail Lines: Gurumoorthy
Dr Gurumoorthy thanked the Union government and railway minister Ashwini Vaishnaw for approving the long-pending project

Nellore: The Union Cabinet has approved the construction of the third and fourth railway lines between Gummidipoondi and Gudur, marking a major boost to rail connectivity and infrastructure in Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu, Tirupati MP Dr Maddila Gurumoorthy said on Wednesday.
Welcoming the decision, Dr Gurumoorthy thanked the Union government and railway minister Ashwini Vaishnaw for approving the long-pending project. The 90-km double-line expansion, estimated to cost `2,229 crore, is scheduled to be completed in four years.
The additional lines are expected to significantly ease congestion on the busy Chennai–Gudur–Renigunta corridor, improve train operations and provide smoother and faster passenger movement. Gudur, a key railway junction connecting Chennai, Vijayawada and Renigunta, will particularly benefit from the enhanced capacity.
The project includes a 360-metre mega bridge across the Swarnamukhi river, besides 21 major bridges, 127 minor bridges and 34 road overbridges/road underbridges. The expanded network will also substantially improve freight handling capacity, facilitating the movement of cement, containers, machinery, food grains, iron and steel.
Dr Gurumoorthy said the project would strengthen the region’s railway infrastructure, support industrial and commercial activity and contribute to economic growth in both Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu. He said the approval reflected the Centre’s focus on expanding rail infrastructure in line with growing passenger and freight requirements.
