BJP Leader Seeks Krishna Water Release to Somasila
BJP leader Midathala Ramesh has urged the Andhra Pradesh government to release Krishna water to the Somasila reservoir, citing adequate storage at Srisailam.
BJP leader Midathala Ramesh has urged the Andhra Pradesh government to immediately release Krishna water to the Somasila reservoir in accordance with the inter-state water-sharing agreement, citing the comfortable storage level at the Srisailam reservoir.
Addressing a BJP meeting at Moolapeta on Wednesday, Ramesh said Srisailam was holding more than 100 tmc ft of water, with the reservoir level crossing 860 ft following heavy inflows into the Krishna basin.
He recalled that an agreement was reached in 1983 by the chief ministers of Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka, in the presence of then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, to supply 15 tmc ft of Krishna water to Chennai for drinking purposes.
As the Srisailam reservoir level had crossed the stipulated 854-ft mark, the government should immediately release 15 tmc ft through the Pothireddypadu Head Regulator and route it to the Somasila reservoir as part of the Chennai drinking water supply arrangement, he said.
Ramesh said the release would also improve water availability in the Somasila reservoir.
BJP leaders Kandikatla Rajeswari, V. Chittibabu and A.V. Subbaiah were present.
