Vijayawada:A Central team of experts visited the home of the two-year-old girl and the surrounding areas in Narasaraopet, Bapatla district, on Friday morning as part of an investigation into the cause of her death due to bird flu.
The team collected 20 environmental and poultry samples, which will be sent for analysis to the National Institute of High Security Animal Diseases in Bhopal.
They visited the girl’s home, interacted with her family members, and learned that the child had allegedly consumed a small piece of raw chicken on February 27 while her mother was cutting meat. It was also revealed that she had done the same about five months earlier.
On February 28, the girl developed a fever and suffered a seizure. She was rushed to a local private hospital, where she was given antibiotics and antipyretics after lab tests. She remained stable for the next three days. On March 3, she was taken back to the same hospital due to weakness and was recommended for admission.
On March 4, she was admitted to AIIMS Mangalagiri. From March 7 onwards, her nasal swab was collected and tested positive for Influenza A. Leptospira testing was also conducted. After further tests, her sample was sent to the National Institute of Virology (NIV), Pune, for sub-typing on March 24, and it was confirmed on March 31 that she was infected with H5N1.
The team also noted that the family had consumed biryani on February 17. In terms of environmental factors, the house was infested with rats, and the parents had placed rat poison in various locations. Animal husbandry officials also inquired about general chicken pricing and the local vendor’s ability to identify symptoms of sick poultry.
